A collaboration...

So one of our many conversations Michele Rivard of Knot Too Shabby and I have had, on possible future projects came to full fruition today. Our Surfers cabinet.  She had this great metal cabinet in the back of her storage unit that she thought would be perfect for a transfer.  Because it was brown and was more than likely used in a garage we decided to make it appealing to the men as well as the woman and used an image of mine that could do just that.

The photo I used was one I took of a surf rental shack that was on the North Shore of Hawaii.  Once we decided what photo to use Michele painted the cabinet with Chalk Paint and added her signature distressing which brought out the complimentary flecks of brown from the background.  I came in once that was dry sealed and did the image transfer part.

Here is the finished product of our collaboration...doesn't it look awesome??

Well now that its finished I can reflect on its lessons and learn from my mistakes, which this piece came with its fair share.  But that's how it rolls with us do-it-yourselfers, we are paving the way for other's to learn from.  If you are going to be in the front of the line you have to be ready for whatever that path has to offer because it will hit you first, good and bad.  I don't mind making mistakes, the trick for me is to surround myself with those who allow me to do so and not judge the process before the gift of knowledge is received.  Sometimes its a good laugh, sometimes its a phone call where you say, "You are not going to believe what I just did!!" with the relief of the other person cracking up on the other end of the line because they KNOW that feeling.

At the end, how I see it we took something that was more than likely overlooked for years and turned it into something cool, unique and "pinworthy"!

  7. This piece was not in the Somerset Studio Magazine but the process is called Image transfers if you go to my new blog at mishkablack.com it has a tab called press and then links to the magazine. The Apprentice September 2013 issue has the article on how to do image transfers. For this piece we enlarged our image into two pieces...
